I've seen references to HO and LO optical links. This apparently means High Order and Low Order, but that isn't a lot of help. I've seen references to eigenvalues on Wikipedia, but that wasn't clear either.

What makes an LO link? Conversely what makes a HO link and why do we need to differentiate?
